I'm the contract software developer for Greenlight Property & Garden, an Auckland garden care business. I built and run their website, and look after their SEO and Google Ads.

Cutting the running costs

Their old site ran on a WordPress subscription with paid plugins, a dated page builder and an external quote form, on top of the domain, and they had no Google Ads. I moved everything to a static site on Cloudflare, inside the free tier, so the only running cost left is the domain, about $5 to $30 a year. The paid plugins and the quote form were rebuilt into the site itself, in the business's own style, for a one-off contract fee and nothing ongoing.

On top of that

I also optimised the site for search, set up and managed their Google Ads, and built them a website editor of their own, so the owner can change text, photos and layout without a developer. Behind a separate login sits an analytics tool that breaks down quotes and finished jobs by suburb, so they can aim their advertising and set prices area by area.

What I took from it

Building for a client meant designing for when I'm not there. Everything had to cost nothing to run and be easy for the owner to change, and he's since made changes to the site himself. It's still live and he still runs it.
